This remedy may be applied alone or in combination with other medications for preventing and controlling seizures (epilepsy). HOW TO USE TOPAMAX:

To prevent kidney stones from forming, drink plenty of liquids while taking topamax unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. The dosage is depends on your medical condition and response to therapy. In children, dosage may also be based on body weight. Your doctor may gradually increase your dose to lower your risk of side effects such as drowsiness and memory problems. It may take several weeks to reach the best dose for you. TOPAMAX SIDE EFFECTS:

You may experience drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, tiredness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, tingling of the hands/feet, loss of appetite, diarrhea, impotence, and weight loss may. Inform your doctor in the case of worsening or persisting any of the side effects. If you experience such unusual but serious topamax side effects as speech/language problems, severe back/side pain, mental/mood changes (e.g., depression, memory problems, nervousness), slow/unsteady movement, rapid breathing, bone pain/breakage, loss of consciousness, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, stomach/abdominal pain, painful urination, bloody or pink-colored urine, sudden vision changes (e.g., blurred vision), eye pain/redness, chest pain. This medication can rarely cause a serious metabolic problem (hyperammonemia), especially if you are also taking valproic acid, sudden/unexplained tiredness, vomiting, or mental changes (e.g., difficulty staying awake) inform your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Don't forget that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious topamax side effects.

TOPAMAX PRECAUTIONS:

Tell your doctor if you have any allergic reaction. Inform your doctor if you have such problems as eye problems (e.g., glaucoma), metabolism problems (e.g., metabolic acidosis, born with metabolism disease), kidney problems, liver problems, severe lung/breathing problems, long-term diarrhea problem, any special diet (e.g., high-protein, ketogenic). This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy or cause blurred vision. Be attentive while engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Avoid alcohol. Topamax can infrequently cause decreased sweating, which could raise your body temperature to unsafe levels (hyperthermia). The risk of this serious side effect is greater in hot weather and/or during vigorous exercise, especially in children. Drink plenty of fluids and dress lightly in hot weather or when exercising. Check carefully for signs of decreased sweating. If this occurs, immediately stop exercising and seek cooler shelter. Seek immediate medical attention if your body temperature is above normal or if you have mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness. Consult your doctor for more details. Your doctor should know that you are taking this remedy before you have surgery. Monitor your weight while taking this medication, and share the results with your doctor. If you lose weight unexpectedly, discuss with your doctor. You may need to change your diet. This product may contain sugar. Caution is advised if you have diabetes. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safe use of this product. Caution is advised when using this drug in children because they may be more sensitive to its side effects, especially effects on bone health, growth rate, and temperature. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Elder people may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication such as drowsiness and dizziness while using this drug. This remedy is not recommended during pregnancy. Discuss all pro and contra with your doctor. Topamax passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

TOPAMAX INTERACTIONS:

Your doctor or pharmacist may already be acquainted with any possible topamax interactions. Your doctor should know about all the remedies you are taking, especially: amitriptyline, carbamazepine, "water pills" (diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide, acetazolamide, dichlorphenamide), metformin, phenytoin, pioglitazone, risperidone, valproic acid, other drugs that cause decreased sweating (e.g., anticholinergics such as belladonna alkaloids/scopolamine, antihistamines such as hydroxyzine, phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine). This medication may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control (e.g., pills, patches). This can result in pregnancy. You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using this medication. Report any unusual vaginal bleeding to your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you also take drugs that cause drowsiness such as: certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., phenobarbital), medicine for sleep or anxiety (e.g., diazepam, alprazolam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., nortriptyline, haloperidol, trazodone). Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products.

NOTES:

Do not share topamax with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., eye exams, serum bicarbonate level) should be performed to monitor your progress and check for side effects.
