This remedy is applied for treating anxiety. Lorazepam is a kind of drug known as benzodiazepine which acts on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. The principle of work of this medication consists in enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemical in the body (GABA).

HOW TO USE LORAZEPAM:

It is an oral medication. You may apply lorazepam with or without food or as prescribed by your doctor. Dosage depends on your medical condition and response to therapy. In order not to forget take this remedy at the same time if it is prescribed by your doctor for regular use. This medication may cause dependence, especially if it has been used regularly for an extended time (more than 1-4 weeks), if it has been used in high doses, or if you have a history of alcoholism, drug abuse, or personality disorder. In such cases, if you suddenly stop this drug, withdrawal reactions may occur. Such reactions can include seizures, trouble sleeping, mental/mood changes, increased reactions to noise/touch/light, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach pain, hallucinations, numbness/tingling of arms and legs, muscle pain, fast heartbeat, short-term memory loss, and very high fever. Report any such reactions to your doctor immediately. When stopping extended, regular treatment with this drug, gradually reducing the dosage of lorazepam as directed will help prevent withdrawal reactions. Ask your doctor for more information. Though it is very unlikely to occur, this medication can also result in abnormal drug-seeking behavior (addiction/habit forming). Don't change your dosage without your doctor's prescription. When used for an extended time, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Properly stop the medication when so directed. This will lessen the chances of becoming addicted. Sudden stop of taking the medication may result in worsening your conditions. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well. Do not increase your dose without first talking to your doctor. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

LORAZEPAM SIDE EFFECTS:

You may experience such side effects as drowsiness, dizziness, loss of coordination, blurred vision, change in sexual interest/ability, hair loss, headache, nausea, constipation, heartburn, or change in appetite may occur. Inform your doctor in the case of worsening or persisting any of the side effects. Don't forget that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of the lorazepam side effects. With children and elder people lorazepam may have opposite effect. This medication is not recommended during pregnancy because it may make harm to an unborn baby. In combinations with such drugs as sodium oxybate (also known as gamma hydroxybutyrate or GHB) this medication may result in very serious lorazepam interaction. Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the mentioned above medications. Your doctor should know about all the medications you are taking, especially of: clozapine, kava, probenecid, theophylline, aminophylline, valproate.
