Ketoconazole is applied for treating certain fungal infections of the skin/mouth/ lungs/bladder (e.g., oral thrush, severe athlete's foot, Coccidioides, candiduria). Some of these infections may require several months of treatment.

HOW TO USE KETOCONAZOLE:

Keep closely your doctor's prescriptions. It is recommended to take ketoconazole one time a day (with or without food). Do not take ketoconazole within 2 hours of taking an antacid (liquid or tablets). Doing so can prevent the absorption of the medication. Dosage depends on your age, weight, medical condition, and response to therapy. In order to get constant level of this remedy in your organism it is recommended to take it at the same time with equal intervals. Don't change your dosage by yourself. Skipping or changing your dose without approval from your doctor may cause the infection to get worse or make the infection more difficult to treat (resistant). Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen in 7 days.

KETOCONAZOLE SIDE EFFECTS:

You may experience stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and gas. Inform your doctor in the case of worsening or persisting any of the side effects. Tell If you experience such unusual but serious ketoconazole side effect as diarrhea, enlarged breasts in men, decreased sexual ability, headache, dizziness, sleepiness, mental/mood changes (depression, thoughts of suicide), tingling/numbness of hands or feet, hair loss, muscle aches, unusual dreams, eye sensitivity to bright light, fever, chills, persistent sore throat, easy bruising/bleeding, headache, severe tiredness, pale lips/nails/skin, fast heartbeat, fast breathing, vision changes inform your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, severe dizziness, itching, swelling, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

KETOCONAZOLE PRECAUTIONS:

Your doctor should know if you have any allergic reaction. Inform your doctor if you have such problems as low testosterone levels, low levels of a certain hormone (e.g., low cortisol, Addison's disease, adrenal insufficiency), liver problems, hepatitis B, alcohol use, decreased or absent stomach acid production (e.g., achlorhydria). This drug may rarely make you dizzy or drowsy. Be attentive while driving, using machinery, or doing any activity that requires alertness. Alcohol may increase the risk of dizziness/drowsiness as well as serious liver problems. Ketoconazole is not recommended during pregnancy. Discuss all pro and contra with your doctor. Ketoconazole passes into breast milk. Breast-feeding is not recommended while using this drug. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

KETOCONAZOLE INTERACTIONS:

Your doctor or pharmacist may already be acquainted with any possible ketoconazole interactions. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first. In combination with such drug as alfuzosin, conivaptan, dofetilide, eletriptan, eplerenone, isoniazid, vardenafil, triazolam, midazolam, estazolam, drugs that decrease stomach acid (e.g., lansoprazole, omeprazole), irinotecan, pimozide, ranolazine, nevirapine, amiodarone, cholesterol lowering drugs (simvastatin, HMG-COA reductase inhibitors such as atorvastatin, lovastatin, cerivastatin) this medication may result in serious ketoconazole interaction. Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the mentioned above medications. Your doctor should know about all the medications you are taking, especially of: sucralfate, H2 blockers (e.g., cimetidine, ranitidine), sildenafil, tadalafil, fentanyl, lopinavir, rifampin, warfarin, phenytoin, ritonavir, darunavir, tacrolimus, theophylline, erythromycin, tipranavir, fosamprenavir, indinavir, cyclosporine, prednisolone, methylprednisolone, digoxin, certain drugs for diabetes (e.g., glipizide, glyburide), trazodone, quetiapine, tolterodine.

NOTES:

Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., liver tests) should be performed regularly to monitor your progress or check for the ketoconazole side effects. Consult your doctor for more details. Keep closely your doctor's prescriptions.
