Fosamax is applied for preventing and curing certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis). It belongs to a class of drugs which lower breaking bone cells activity. You should swallow this medication whole without crushing, chewing, or breaking the pills it. Don't lie down for at least 30 minutes (preferably 1 to 2 hours). It takes the same time eating or drinking anything other than plain water. Avoid taking of this medication going to bed or before rising for the day. It may cause side effects because the medication may not be absorbed. Other drugs, coffee, vitamins, antacids, tea, soda, mineral water and food can reduce the absorption of fosamax. FOSAMAX SIDE EFFECTS:

You may experience such fosamax side effects as constipation, gas, stomach pain, or nausea. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience some serious side effects, such as jaw pain, an increase in muscle or bone pain, black stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, swelling of joints/hands/ankles/feet, irritation and ulcers of the esophagus, chest pain, new or worsening heartburn, trouble or painful swallowing. If you experience any of the mentioned above side effect stop using the drug and ask for immediate medical help. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, dizziness, swelling, trouble breathing, itching. If you experience any other fosamax side effects inform your doctor or pharmacist. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

FOSAMAX PRECAUTIONS:

Tell your doctor if you have any allergic reaction. Your doctor or pharmacist must be aware of your medical conditions, especially if you have such problems as disorders of the esophagus (e.g., esophageal stricture or achalasia), inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes, severe kidney disease, trouble swallowing, low calcium levels, stomach/intestinal disorders (e.g., ulcers). Sometimes you can experience serious problem with your jawbone problems (osteonecrosis). If you have such serious problems as cancer, anemia, blood clotting disorders, infections in the mouth or other diseases of the mouth, or poor dental hygiene, advise your doctor before taking fosamax. Be convinced that your doctor is aware of all your medical conditions (especially if you have cancer) and knows about all medications you are taking. It is better for children not to take the drug. Investigations have proved that many children who used this medication experienced such serious side effects fever, vomiting, and flu-like symptoms. Fosamax is not advised during pregnancy and can be taken only if it's really necessary. Discuss all pro and contra with your doctor or health care professional. This medication occurs into breast milk. If you take fosamax consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

FOSAMAX INTERACTIONS:

Your doctor or pharmacist may already be acquainted with any possible fosamax interactions. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine consulting the doctor. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone). Look through very attentively the instructions on all your medications because they may contain aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen). Such things as increasing weight-bearing exercise, eating well-balanced meals containing adequate calcium and vitamin D, stopping smoking, and limiting alcohol will help you to make your bones harder.
