Elavil is applied for treating mental/mood problems such as depression. HOW TO USE ELAVIL:

Consult your doctor before taking the drug. It is an oral drug. It is recommended to take it 1 to 3 times every day or as prescribed by your doctor. It is better to take it before you are going to bed if you are prescribed one dose a day. The dosage is based on your age, medical condition and response to therapy. At the beginning your doctor may prescribe you a very little dose, but he may increase it gradually. Keep all your doctor prescriptions very closely. Using of medication may take 1 to 2 weeks to feel effect. To achieve more effective result take the drug regularly. Don't stop taking the drug even if you feel better. Choose the most suitable for you time to take elavil. Sudden stop of intake of the drug can worsen some conditions, so consult your doctor. You may experience muscle aches, headaches and worsening anxiety. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased. Inform your doctor in or health care professional the case of persisting or worsening (e.g., your feelings of sadness get worse, or you have thoughts of suicide).

ELAVIL SIDE EFFECTS:

You may experience such elavil side effects as vomiting, loss of appetite, dry mouth, weight gain, blurred vision, constipation, fast heartbeat, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, changes in taste, tiredness, or trouble urinating. Tell your doctor immediately in the case of appearing or worsening any of the side effects. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. If you experience any of the unusual but dangerous side effects as persistent heartburn, confusion, uncontrollable movements of the mouth/face/hands, mental/mood changes (e.g., agitation, excitement), loss of coordination, fast/irregular heartbeat, numbness/tingling of the hands/feet, shaking, restlessness, unusual hunger, muscle weakness/spasms, decreased sexual ability/desire, enlarged/painful breasts, ringing in the ears, increased thirst/urination, fainting, nervousness, severe constipation, shakiness, sweating, severe vomiting, swelling of the hands/feet, seizures, easy bruising/bleeding, signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat), yellowing eyes/skin, severe stomach/abdominal pain, dark urine, persistent nausea/vomiting, pain/redness/swelling of arms or legs, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, vision changes consult your doctor immediately. If you experience serious allergic reaction ask for medical help. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: severe dizziness, itching, rash, swelling, trouble breathing. In the case of not mentioned elavil side effects inform your doctor. Many people using this medication do not experience serious elavil side effects.

ELAVIL PRECAUTIONS:

Tell your doctor if you have any allergic reaction. Your doctor or pharmacist must know your medical conditions, especially if you have such problems as a certain eye problem (untreated narrow-angle glaucoma), problems urinating (e.g., due to enlarged prostate), a heart attack in the last 30 days, eating disorders (e.g., bulimia), overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), long-term lung problems (e.g., pulmonary insufficiency), a certain eye problem (open-angle glaucoma), diabetes, kidney problems, personal or family history of mental/mood conditions (e.g., bipolar disorder, psychosis), liver problems, heart problems, family history of suicide, seizures, conditions that may increase your risk of seizures (e.g., other brain disease, alcohol withdrawal). This drug may make you drowsy or giddy or cause blurred vision. Be attentive while carrying out actions requiring high attention, such, for example, as driving or using machinery. Limit alcohol. Stand up slowly to avoid giddiness. Prevent your doctor about intake of the drug before having surgery. This medication may make you more sensitive to the suns. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths, and sunlamps. Check your blood sugar levels regularly as directed by your doctor, because this medication may increase your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience such symptoms such as increased thirst/urination, shakiness, unusual sweating, or hunger. Depression can lead to thoughts/attempts of suicide. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any suicidal thoughts, worsening depression, or any other mental/mood changes (including new or worsening anxiety, trouble sleeping, irritability, agitation, panic attacks, hostile/angry feelings, severe restlessness, impulsive actions, and rapid speech). Follow all the prescription and in the case of necessity adjust your drugs. Elder people are to be more careful because they have more risk to such side effects as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty urinating. Caution is advised when using this drug in children. Elavil is not advised during pregnancy and can be taken only if it's really necessary. Discuss all pro and contra with your doctor. This medication occurs into breast milk. If you take the drug consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

ELAVIL INTERACTIONS:

Your doctor or pharmacist may already be acquainted with any possible elavil interactions. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine consulting the doctor. In combination with some drugs such as arbutamine, lumefantrine, sibutramine, cisapride, pimozide, halofantrine, disopyramide, iomeprol, MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) you may experience very serious (even fatal) side effects. Avoid taking MAO inhibitors within 2 weeks before and after treatment with this medication. Inform your doctor about all the drugs your are taking. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: alcohol, amprenavir/fosamprenavir, duloxetine, guanethidine, levodopa, clonidine, ethchlorvynol, guanadrel, warfarin, barbiturates (e.g., phenobarbital), cimetidine, drugs for heart rhythm (e.g., flecainide, propafenone, quinidine), phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine), stimulants (e.g., amphetamines, methylphenidate), SSRI antidepressants (e.g., citalopram, fluvoxamine, sertraline, fluoxetine), certain sympathomimetics (e.g., albuterol, epinephrine, phenylephrine), St John's wort, terbinafine, reserpine, thyroid supplements, disulfiram. If you have been taking fluoxetine it takes 5 weeks before starting elavil. Inform your doctor if you smoke or if you have recently stopped smoking. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you also take drugs that cause drowsiness such as: certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine), medicine for sleep or anxiety (e.g., diazepam, alprazolam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., fluphenazine, risperidone, trazodone). Look through all the instructions of your medications (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products. Also report the use of drugs which might increase seizure risk (decrease seizure threshold) when combined with elavil (e.g., tramadol, isoniazid INH, bupropion, theophylline, among others). Inform your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

NOTES:

Try not to miss a dose, but if it happened, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double change the dose. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., kidney function, amitriptyline blood level) may be performed from time to time to monitor your progress or check for side effects.
