Celecoxib is used to treat arthritis, acute pain, and menstrual pain and discomfort. The pain and swelling relief provided by this medication helps you perform more of your normal daily activities. Celecoxib is also used to decrease growths found in the intestines (colon polyps) of persons with a family history of this condition. This drug works by blocking the enzyme in your body that makes prostaglandins. Decreasing prostaglandins helps to reduce pain and swelling. This medication is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), specifically a COX-2 inhibitor, which relieves pain and swelling (inflammation).

The lowest effective dosage should always be used, and only for the prescribed length of time. If you don't have any contraindication from your doctor take the medication with a full glass of water. Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking celecoxib. You may experience effect of the medication in two weeks if you use it, for example, for treating angina. Your doctor or pharmacist may already be acquainted with any possible celecoxib interactions. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine consulting the doctor. Your doctor should know about all the medications you are taking, especially such as high blood pressure drugs such as ACE inhibitors (e.g., captopril, lisinopril), oral bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate), anti-platelet drugs (e.g., cilostazol, clopidogrel), "blood thinners" (e.g., enoxaparin, heparin, warfarin), corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone), fluconazole, lithium, "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, triamterene). Check such medications as pain/fever drugs (NSAIDs such as celecoxib, aspirin, ibuprofen) are similar to the drug, so taking them together fraught with side effects. But if it is prescribed by your doctor (to prevent heart strokes) a low dose of aspirin - take it. Daily use of NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen) may decrease aspirin's ability to prevent heart attack/stroke. Ask your doctor about other ways of treating your pain/fever. Consult your doctor for more detailed information.
